A Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, localiza-se em Vila Real no interior Norte de Portugal, e foi criada enquanto Instituto Universitário em 1980, resultando do anterior Instituto Politécnico de Vila Real, com a preocupação de promover e contribuir para a correcção das assimetrias regionais e o desenvolvimento económico.
The University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), a former Polytechnic Institute, is located in the North of Portugal, in Vila Real and has been a University since 1980.
Insere-se numa região predominantemente agrícola na proximidade da belíssima Região do Vinho do Porto, a Paisagem do Alto Douro Vinhateiro classificada como Património Mundial, e do Parque Natural do Alvão, do Parque Nacional da Peneda/Gerês e do Parque Natural de Montesinho. Iniciou com os cursos da área Agronómica: Engenharias Agrícola, Zootécnica, Florestal e Medicina Veterinária. Pouco tempo depois alargou o seu espectro e ofertas educativas às Ciências Humanas e Sociais, e às Ciências Exactas, Naturais e Tecnológicas, hoje um total de 74 cursos frequentados por cerca de 7000 alunos, integrando cerca de 150 alunos em Arquitectura Paisagista.
The University is very important in the region, to local economy and helping to balance the regional differences that existed. It is located in an agricultural region and neighbours the Port Wine region – the world heritage landscape of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro, the Natural Park of Alvão, National Park of Peneda/ Gerês and Natural Park of Montesinho. The first courses introduced were in the field of Agronomy: Agricultural, Zootechnical and Forestry Engineering and also Veterinarian Medicine. They were followed by courses in the fields of Human and Social Sciences and Exact, Natural and technological Sciences and has today, a total of 74 courses and 7000 students including the 150 students in Landscape Architecture.
This Institute assumed a relevant role, contributing to regional development. That’s why, in September 1979, the University Institute of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro was created and, less than 10 years after that, in recognition of its intense activity in the dominion of teaching, scientific and technological research, the Government transformed the University Institute into a University. Nowadays, UTAD is considered an important reference point in the Portuguese University System.
According to its Statutes, this University, whose fundamental aims are Teaching, Research, and Extension and Support to the Community, shall be a Centre of Excellence for permanent education and to the creation, transmission and diffusion of culture, science and technology.
UTAD has its own place within the core of Higher Education in Portugal since it contributes to satisfying the needs regarding courses of national interest, choosing areas in which the labour market is not yet exhausted. UTAD’s flexibility, demonstrated by its capacity to adapt to new situations, harmonizing the available resources with the modernity of teaching and being able to propose new forms of learning and of scientific transmission, is a testimony to its vitality. It is precisely this vitality that justifies it’s position in the core of Portuguese Universities.
